Diving

Doing some of this tomorrow! Eek! Turtles and ray and sharks, oh my!

We’ll be diving out of Byron Bay, which is quickly becoming my most favorite weekend destination. In the last few months I’ve spent nearly as many weekends in Byron as I have in Brisbane. It’s hard to argue with cheap, accessible camping, enticing food of all types and sealife just a few meters offshore.

I’ve been swimming since the age of 5, so scuba was the logical next step in my underwater evolution. As a kid, family vacations always took the form of snorkeling and beach adventures, and now that I live within a few hours drive of spectacular diving, I want to soak as much of it up as possible.

It’s surreal, being so far down and looking up to see a good 60+ feet of water above you. Everything feels and sounds different, but a sort of peace just takes over once you get comfortable with the fact that you’re hanging out in a world that’s definitely not yours.

Fingers crossed that the weather stays clear, the wind stays down and that the fish come out to play!

The Sea, once it casts it spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever. –Jacques-Yves Cousteau
